May 30, 2023 (newstodate): The North Icelandic virtual carrier Niceair folded its wings earlier this month after only some 11 months in the air with the launch of flights between Akureyri and Copenhagen on June 2, 2022.
Anyhow, Niceair's opening of air traffic directly into the Northern parts of the country demonstrated the market for air services from Europe, bypassing the country's main hub at Keflavik.
First, it led Icelandair to establish flights connecting Keflavik and Akureyri - and now the company is taking it a step further.
In the period October 15-November 30, 2023, Icelandair will offer flights between Akureyri and Keflavík Airport in connection with its international flights, allowing Iceland-Europe traffic to travel seamlessly between Keflavik and Akureyri on transfer flights.
So far, Icelandair will be offering three weekly rotations on the new connection flight that can be booked only in connection with international flights - and thus not available for domestic passengers.
Niceair may not, however, remain just another dead end in Iceland's aviation history.
Thorvaldur Ludvik Sigurjonsson was Mng Dir of Niceair as well as CEO at Circle Air, an Icelandic air tours and charter company operating from Reykjavik and Akureyri, offering sightseeing tours with smaller aircraft.
Mr Sigurjonsson remains confident that there is a need for a carrier based at Akureyri to open up for a new stream of tourism in Iceland where the focus has so far centered on the area in the south due to the location of the country's largest airport, Keflavik, and Iceland's capital Reykjavik.
-Maybe. But for now I need some time to recover and rethink the situation. Let's see after a few months, says Mr Sigurjonsson.
