Apr 12, 2023 (newstodate): Latvia's Riga Airport may seem to have recovered in cargo in March 2023.
After steep declines by 39 and 40 percent, y-o-y, in volumes in January and February 2023, to 1,485 and 1,476 tonnes, respectively, the airport saw its volumes up nine percent, y-o-y, in March, to a total of 1,626 tonnes.
However, behind the positive change is the fact that after the Russian/Ukrainian war starting on February 24, 2022, things changed dramatically.
In January 2022, the growth in the airport's air cargo volumes was 28 percent, y-o-y, to 2,451 tonnes, and in February the volumes handled were up 63 percent to 2,430 tonnes.
But in March 2022 the airport's cargo dipped by 35 percent, y-o-y, to 1,488 tonnes - and even with a nine percent increase in March '23 the outlook for Riga Airport's cargo business remains marked by challenges.
