Apr 12, 2023 (newstodate): With some 600,000 flight movements annually, the Norwegian airspace has now become even more safe with implementation of new radar technology.
Avinor has thus completed the installation of about 200 WAM - Wide Area Multilateration - antennas on mountain tops and at airports across the country, replacing about half of Norway’s conventional radars.
-While conventional radars look outwards and upwards, the WAM antennas also provide a picture downwards. Given Norway’s topography with numerous fjords and valleys, the new WAM technology enables pilots and air traffic services to collaborate in a better way, says Ellen Lystad, Director of new technology development within air navigation at Avinor.
The WAM project of Avinor, considered to be one of the world’s largest and most complex of its kind, is provided and implemented by the Swedish defense and security company Saab.
