Apr 13, 2023 (newstodate): Promising news from Finland: air cargo volumes handled at Finland's Helsinki Airport increased by 7.3 percent, y-o-y, in March '23.
A total of 14,439 tonnes of cargo and mail was handled, with the growth driven by 14,210 tonnes of international cargo that was up by 6.7 percent.
March '23 thus performed better than February '23 that saw a drop by 23.9 percent, y-o-y, and January '23 when volumes were down by 25.9 percent, reflecting the immediate effect from Russia's invasion of Ukraine and the closure of Russian airspace.
After the first three months of 2023, the airport's total cargo volumes are however still down 15.6 percent, y-o-y, compared to 24.8 percent in February '23.
The positive rebound in cargo volumes is a result of the gradual return of traffic by Finnair on routes to Asia, the increased focus on traffic to NAM as well as the flights to Doha in cooperation with Qatar Airways that has suspended its own flights on the route, leaving the daily traffic to Finnair from December 15, 2022.
As a result, volumes on Finnair's ME traffic in March 2023 were up by 541.8 percent, y-o-y, to 2,116 tonnes.
