Apr 17, 2023 (newstodate): While still lagging behind corresponding months in 2022, flown air cargo volumes handled at Oslo Airport are now showing cautious signs of recovery.
In March 2023, flown cargo and mail volumes at Oslo Airport were thus four percent down, y-o-y, after seeing drops by 10 percent in January and 14 percent in February '23.
A total of 14,243 tonnes of cargo and mail was handled at the airport in March, including 12,968 tonnes of flown international cargo that were down by five percent.
The closure of Russian airspace, the aftermath of the Covid-19, high global salmon market prices and Norwegian plans for a tax hike spell challenges for Norway's salmon exports.
As earlier reported by newstodate, this is impacting the salmon cargo handling companies like GPC, Gardermoen Perishables Center.
-Overall, our performance has been comparatively good, but the volumes are clearly down, around 20 percent compared to last year, said Torgil Staalberg, GPC Mng Dir.
-The closure of the Russian airspace for overflights between Europe and Asia has reduced the freighter uplift capacity in our market; Qatar Airways is however still operating some eight to nine weekly freighters at Oslo Airport; Korean Airlines has reduced to two weekly operations, while Emirates SkyCargo has currently suspended its freighter services.
