Apr 18, 2023 (newstodate): Copenhagen Airport handled a total of 64,566 tonnes of air cargo and mail in Jan-Mar 2023, legacy carriers and integrators combined.
This was a decline by 16.6 percent, y-o-y, and also 5.3 percent less than in pre-covid Q1/2019.
The situation is even more bleak when considering the volumes of cargo on legacy carriers alone: in Q1/23 this reached a total of 41,993 tonnes - down 21.8 percent, y-o-y, but trailing behind Q1/19 by 38.4 percent.
-While passenger traffic through the airport is steadily picking up driven by SAS' ongoing route network expansion, new traffic by Air India from March 1, 2023, and increased frequencies on existing routes served by other airlines, cargo demand remains comparatively weak as is seen at most other airports, says an industry source.
-Also major logistics providers including DSV, K&N, Schenker have increasingly established own air logistics solutions driving cargo further south.
-However, Copenhagen Airport is seeing brisk development with the weekly freighter service by Ethiopian Cargo since March 12, 2023, to be augmented by the opening of Ethiopian Airlines' four weekly passenger flights from May 22, 2023. Air Canada is also to add Montreal as a new destination starting from June 1, 2023, with five weekly rotations expected to bolster the air cargo business as well.
-All in all, we may expect the situation to improve significantly after this summer as to air cargo volumes handled at Copenhagen Airport, the source says.
