Mar 27, 2023 (newstodate): The Faroe Islands' Vagar Airport may expect two major new developments in 2023 - one on the air cargo, and one on the passenger side.
On the air cargo side of the business, plans for the launch of FarCargo, a new cargo carrier, are still alive - but suffering from teething troubles after aborting the acceptance of its first Boeing 757-200 converted freighter slated for delivery already by December 2022, while a replacement has still not been revealed pushing the launch date further back.
Serving its primary owner Bakkafrost, FarCargo will carry Faroese seafood to the US market as well as to Israel, reportedly aiming at up to five weekly US-bound flights and one weekly operation to Israel.
On the passenger side, Atlantic Airline's CEO, Johanna a Berghi, has told the country's media that plans for launch of passenger flights from the Faroe Islands to a US destinations are now maturing and slated to start from August 2023 with a weekly rotation to Stewart International Airport outside of New York City, one-and-a-half hours' drive from New York City center.
Originally, hopes were to start services from Vagar Airport to New York already from September 2019 including a series of 4-6 rotations with Airbus A320neo aircraft pending full authorizations by the government bodies involved.
This did not materialize, however, due to late delivery of the first Airbus A320neo, but Atlantic Airways also did not get the Foreign Carrier Permit to introduce the flights in time.
Later, hopes were to start flights to the USA at least before Christmas 2019 - but the DOT approvals did not arrive until December 2019 - and revised plans for a start of the US flights in 2020 were soon overtaken by the Covid-10 pandemic that brought all flight operations to a stand-still.
Now, conditions are ripening with the replenishment of the carrier's fleet with acceptance of one more Airbus A320 aircraft, landing at Vagar Airport on March 6, 2023.
The aircraft is delivered under a lease contract with Avolon and provides capacity for the summer schedule after the redelivery of the carrier's last remaining Airbus A319 in December 2022.
In the fleet of Atlantic Airways are thus now two Airbus A320ceo and two Airbus A320neo.
