Mar 15, 2023 (newstodate): In 2018, Russia's president issued an instruction to redistribute domestic flows to have more than half of the country's inter-regional flights bypass Moscow.
It now seems to be fulfilled - but for unforeseen reasons...
After the launch of Russia's invasion of Ukraine in the aftermath of the Coronavirus, the volume of Russia's international flights has decreased sharply, leading airlines to establish instead new domestic point-to-point route networks benefiting from airport incentive schemes.
The proportion of inter-regional flights through Moscow's airports has thus decreased due to changed market conditions rather than driven by presidential directives.
By the end of 2022, 50 percent of the inter-regional flights in Russia were thus operated without transiting through Moscow's airport; in 2018, the proportion was only 20 percent; in 2019 the share was 39 percent, in 2020 growing to 45.6 and in 2021 to 46.3 percent.
Already in 2018, Aeroflot aimed at expanding the network of scheduled inter-regional passenger routes to reach 50 percent of all scheduled domestic flights bypassing Moscow by 2024.
