Mar 15, 2023 (newstodate): Western sanctions on Russia hit hard on the country's aviation industry.
When the sanctions took effect, 75 Russian commercial aircraft were outside the country for maintenance or in service at western airports - and they were all lost.
According to Russia's minister of transport, 1,297 aircraft are currently used in Russia, of which 1,167 are passenger aircraft.
Russian airlines continue to buy back aircraft from foreign lessors, and the government has allocated more than 300 billion rubles for this purpose.
By the end of 2022, Aeroflot thus reported that it had bought 10 Boeing 777-300ER aircraft, which had been under financial leasing from an Irish leasing company since 2013 and 2014.
Also in May 2022, Aeroflot bought eight Airbus A330 wide-body aircraft from foreign lessors.
