Mar 14, 2023 (newstodate): Isavia is taking an optimistic view on growth potentials for the period till 2045.
In 2022, the key Icelandic gateway, Keflavik Airport, handled 6.1 mio passengers, while estimates by the start of 2022 were only 4.6 mio.
Now, Isavia has again updated its long-term master plan, which aims at increasing the airport’s annual handling capacity to 15.1 million passengers in 2045.
Compared to other Nordic airports, Keflavik Airport is little affected by the ongoing Russian/Ukrainian war as the focus is on US/Europe traffic and not on Asian lanes, as in the case of specially Helsinki Airport.
With two runways, Keflavik Airport will be able to accommodate 12.9 million passengers by 2035, while an expansion of the existing terminal facilities will be needed.
To grow pax volumes to 15.1 mio in 2045, the construction of a third runway will be needed, but this is also feasible given adequate funding.
The new master plan is also looking into prospects for growth in air cargo where the airport will need a new cargo aircraft apron area, cargo facilities, freight forwarding and administrative facilities.
Compared to other Nordic airports, Keflavik Airport is little affected by the ongoing Russian/Ukrainian war as the focus is on US/Europe traffic and not on Asian lanes, as in the case of not least Helsinki Airport.
