Mar 30, 2023 (newstodate): Romania's newest airport, Brasov-Ghimbav Airport has become the first in the country to have a virtual control tower.
Provided by the Swedish company Saab, all take-off and landing operations at the airport are now coordinated in real-time by specialists from the Flight Control Center in Arad, close to the border with Hungary.
Besides being the country's first airport to implement a virtual ATC system, Brasov-Ghimbav Airport has also become the world's second airport, after London City Airport, to bypass the initial stage of conventional ATC by going directly to remote ATC technology.
Equipped with one 2,820 m runway, Brasov-Ghimbav Airport is the first airport to be built in post-Soviet Romania, and the 17th commercial airport in the country.
Flights are expected to commence in June 2023, and so far Aegean Airlines and Animawings will launch seasonal charter flights from the airport that will be home base for Dan Air, offering scheduled services to initially eight European destinations.
