Mar 15, 2023 (newstodate): Like most other Nordic airports, Finland's Helsinki Airport saw cargo volumes down in February 2023, compared to 2022.
A total of 12,694 tonnes of cargo was handled at the airport, a decrease by 23.9 percent, y-o-y.
As always, international cargo providing the bulk of the cargo tonnage painted the bleak picture with a decline by 24.7 percent, to 12,542 tonnes.
After the first two months of 2023, the airport's total cargo volumes are thus down 24.8 percent, y-o-y, to 25,533 tonnes.
Among the Nordic airports, Helsinki is especially hard hit by the closure of the Russian airspace as well as the effects from the distortions caused by earlier Covid-19 lockdowns in the Asian markets that have so far been in the focus of Finnair.
For the same reasons, Helsinki Airport has lost its prime strategic asset of providing the shortest routes between Northern Europe and China/Asia due to its geographical advantages.
