Mar 21, 2023 (newstodate): The closure of Russian airspace, aftermath of the Covid-19, high global salmon market prices and Norwegian plans for a tax hike spell challenges for Norway's salmon exports.
This is also felt by the salmon cargo handling companies like GPC, Gardermoen Perishables Center.
-Overall, our performance has been comparatively good, but the volumes are clearly down, around 20 percent compared to last year, says Torgil Staalberg, GPC Mng Dir.
-The closure of the Russian airspace for overflights between Europe and Asia has reduced the freighter uplift capacity in our market; Qatar Airways is however still operating some eight to nine weekly freighters at Oslo Airport; Korean Airlines has reduced to two weekly operations, while Emirates SkyCargo has currently suspended its freighter services.
-Also, 2022 ended with a minor drop in volumes handled by GPC to some 100,000 tonnes in 2022, down from 209,000 tonnes in 2021, says Mr Staalberg.
Gardermoen Perishables Center, GPC, is owned by Schenker Norway, DHL and the Norwegian freight forwarder Air Cargo Logistics.
