Mar 30, 2023 (newstodate): As one of few international airlines, Finnair has a taste for flights to Svalbard in the Norwegian archipelago in the Arctic Ocean.
Again in 2023, the carrier will be operating at the airport of Longyearbyen for a German tour operator with flights using Airbus A320 scheduled for July 19 and 29, 2023, flying in from Hanover, with the flight on July 29 returning from Svalbard to Zurich, in Switzerland.
As the first airline planning to offer scheduled international services to Svalbard, Finnair intended to offer three weekly flights from Helsinki during the period from June 1 to August 27, 2016 - but plans were finally scrapped as Norway's Ministry of Transport and Communication decided to downgrade Svalbard Airport from international to national status.
The decision took effect from October 1, 2017, but charter flights may still be offered to Svalbard on an ad-hoc basis requiring individual permits.
Offering scheduled domestic services to Oslo are SAS and Norwegian that also operates flights between Svalbard and Tromso in Norway.
