Mar 07, 2023 (newstodate): The aftermath of Covid-19 lockdowns, shortfall of cargo-only operations - and finally the closure of Russia's airspace after the outbreak of the war on Ukraine make February y-o-y statistics partly meaningless.
Anyhow, while the war broke out only on February 24, Finnair Cargo reports a decline in February '23 by 20.8 percent, y-o-y, in volumes totaling 9,880 tonnes.
However, in February '23, the 9,880 tonnes were carried exclusively as belly cargo that increased by 9.4 percent, while the all-cargo loads were 100 percent down.
In effect, volumes on Asian lanes increased by 7.3 percent to 5,327 tonnes; European loads were up by 57.8 percent to 1,333 tonnes, while cargo on the North Atlantic routes were still down by 57.6 percent to 1,218 tonnes.
During January-February 2023, Finnair Cargo transported a total of 9,337 tonnes, a decline by 22.7 percent, y-o-y.
In pre-Covid Jan-Feb 2019, a total of 23,619 tonnes of cargo was lifted on Finnair flights, an increase by 26 percent, y-o-y.
-A growth primarily driven by the strong positive cargo market development in Japan and Western Europe, the company said back then.
