Mar 28, 2023 (newstodate): Hopes for German tourist traffic to Iceland's Akureyri and Egilsstadir airports have been extinguished - for this summer, at least..
In July 2022, the German leisure carrier Condor published plans to introduce one weekly flight from Frankfurt to Akureyri in the north and to Egilsstadir in the east of Iceland from May 2023, marking the first time Condor would put Iceland on its route map.
However, this will not happen as Condor has called off the plans.
-Unfortunately, the project with Condor did not work out this year, but we hope that there will be international flights between Germany and the North and East in 2024, Sigrun Bjork Jakobsdottir, manager of Isavia Domestic Airports, says in a release published by Icelandic media.
To boost development, Isavia has implemented a scheme of grants, subsidies and discounts to lure new operators into the two airports; one newcomer in summer 2023 will be the Swiss carrier Edelweiss, announcing plans to be offering a weekly rotation between Zurich and Akureyri from July 7 to August 18, 2023, comprising seven roundtrips with Airbus A320 aircraft.
