Feb 09, 2023 (newstodate): Germany's Frankfurt Hahn Airport has long been in a limbo after filing for insolvency in 2021.
Now, the airport may see lights at the end of the tunnel again, as a prospective investor has turned up. The problem is, however, that the potential investor is NR Holding - with a strong Russian footprint.
The owner of NR Holding is a Russian oligarch Viktor Charitonin who is also behind the F1 racetrack Nurnburgring.
Mr Charitonin is currently not on the list of banned Russians during this period of Russian war on Ukraine, but the connection has anyway caused strong political reactions.
A probe now underway is to ascertain if Frankfurt Hahn Airport is a German strategic asset, which would put the acquisition in doubt.
The airport has seen many abrupt changes of ownership over the years, including its acquisition by the Chinese HNA Group in 2016 - pulling out again from 2018..
