Feb 09, 2023 (newstodate): As the first European carrier, Ryanair has confirmed its return to the Ukrainian market immediately after Russia's ongoing war has ended.
-We are very keen to return to Ukraine as soon as it is safe to do so, Ryanair chairman Michael O'Leary said during the recent financial results announcement.
Ryanair is already hiring Ukrainian cockpit and cabin crews, pending a later reopening of bases in the country and opening of flights to and from Ukraine.
Ryanair entered the Ukrainian market with the first flights in 2018 and going all-in from 2018, while Wizz Air was the country's first low-cost carrier with the launch on July 18, 2008.
Ukraine and EU landed an Open Skies Agreement on October 12, 2021, and Ryanair was one carrier to take full advantage of the new potentials.
In response, Ryanair announced the opening of 13 new routes from Ukrainian airports, bringing the number of routes to 90 and the weekly flights to some 230 during the summer 2022 schedule - which was then suspended as the Russian president launched the invasion of Ukraine.
