Feb 09, 2023 (newstodate): Russia is keen to reopen flights between Russia and Georgia, stalled since 2019.
Russia's Foreign Minister, Sergei Lavrov, recently expressed hopes that flights between the two countries will be resumed, but both the US and EU have warned that this would be considered a breach of sanctions imposed on Russia due the aggression against Ukraine.
In response to large-scale demonstrations in Tbilisi on June 20, 2019, triggered by a speech by a Russian parliamentarian in the Georgian Parliament, Russia's president issued a decree banning passenger flights between Russia and Georgia.
The president also recommended that Russian carriers stop charter and scheduled flights to Georgian destinations, leaving an estimated 150,000 Russians to reconsider their holiday plans in summer 2019.
But after the start of Russia's war on Ukraine, Georgia has emerged as a logistics conduit between Russia and the outside world, also seeing an explosive growth in remittances between the two countries and driving a Russian appetite for reopening of air traffic.
