Feb 02, 2023 (newstodate): On January 31, 2023, Lithuanian Airports officially launched the construction of a new departure terminal at Vilnius Airport.
The project is slated to be completed by the end of 2024, with commissioning to take place by spring 2025 after completion of installation of all pertinent equipment.
The new 14,400 m2 terminal will increase the total area of Vilnius Airport's passenger terminals by a third and double the passenger throughput to 2,400 passengers per hour.
The construction of the new passenger terminal will be accompanied by the renovation and conversion of the old terminals, with phased expansion and modernization.
The strategic priorities of Lithuanian Airports for 2023 also include the expansion of the northern apron of Kaunas Airport, as well as an analysis of the possibilities for the expansion of Kaunas Airport's passenger terminal.
In April 2022, the Dutch company Royal HaskoningDHV emerged as the winner of a tender by Lithuanian Airports for a master plan analyzing and preparing for a long-term network development of Vilnius, Kaunas and Palanga airports.
The coming 10-years master plan expected to be finalized in summer 2023 will be worked out by analyzing the development potentials and alternatives of the three airports of Vilnius, Kaunas and Palanga, as well as focusing on the specific strengths of the individual airports, routes expansion, and increasing the capacity of the passenger and cargo terminals.
In 2022, the airport at Vilnius, Kaunas and Palanga jointly handled at total of 5.35 million passengers, twice as many as in 2021, and the airports also operated almost 51,000 flights, which is almost 48 percent more than in 2021.
Also in 2022, a total of 21,290 tonnes of cargo was handled at Vilnius, Kaunas and Palanga, with Vilnius accounting for 15,940 tonnes, up four percent, y-o-y, Kaunas Airport generating 5,060 tonnes, unchanged against 2021, and finally Palanga Airport that saw volumes up by 217 percent to 290 tonnes.
