Feb 08, 2023 (newstodate): Helsinki Airport experienced a weak start in cargo volumes 2023.
A total of 12,839 tonnes of cargo and mail was handled at the airport in January 2023, a decline by 25.6 percent, y-o-y.
Driving the downward trend were international cargo volumes that dropped 26.3 percent, y-o-y, to 12,702 tonnes.
In January 2022, a total of 15,996 tonnes of cargo was handled at the airport - a promising increase by 41.4 percent, y-o-y, reflecting the recovery of traffic at Finland's capital airport where its base carrier Finnair started stepping up its long-haul traffic again as the coronavirus eased.
Then came the Russian war on Ukraine from February 2022, that also closed down Finnair's Russian overflights on the crucial Asian lanes.
