Feb 20, 2023 (newstodate): Finnair is fighting an uphill battle to overcome the impacts from first the Covid-19 and next the Russian war on Ukraine, leading the carrier to perform a deep turn-around in strategies.
And it seems that the company's efforts are paying off well, with the air cargo business performing nicely in 2022.
With an increasing volume of passenger flights in 2022, Finnair’s cargo revenue raised the bar, recording an increase over 2021.
Finnair started cargo-only flights on March 28, 2020, and in 2021, these operations generated over half of the carrier's total revenues.
From 2022, passenger flights gradually returned after the Covid-19 period, and cargo returned from all-cargo flights to belly compartments.
In January-December 2023, Finnair Cargo saw cargo volumes increasing 16.9 percent, y-o-y, to a total of 122,719 tonnes.
While an improvement on 2021, this was still a far cry from volumes in pre-Covid 2019 that generated 173,282 tonnes of cargo.
