Feb 20, 2022 (newstodate): Seemingly undaunted by EU sanctions against Belarus targeting western aircraft lease contracts with Belavia, Belarus is still determined to grow the airline's fleet of western aircraft.
Speaking at an enlarged board meeting of the Aviation Department of the Belarus Ministry of Transport and Communications, Belavia's General Director Igor Cherginets aired his determination to grow the airline’s fleet to double size - without setting a specific timeline for the project, nor revealing the sourcing of the aircraft.
However, plans are to increase the fleet of Boeing 737-800 aircraft from today's five to eight units, and the fleet of Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft will grow from one to four units. All these aircraft are leased from western companies.
Belavia will also expand the fleet of Embraer 195 SLR from four to eight units, and a second Embraer 175LR will be added.
Among the leased aircraft are three E195 and two E175 aircraft leased from the Danish lessor Nordic Aviation Capital under a contract signed in November 2018, as well as two more aircraft on earlier lease contracts.
