Dec 18, 2023 (newstodate): The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus would like to see the opening of direct flights connecting with Russia.
   -Obviously, this is something we would really like to do. But in order for this to happen, the Russian authorities must give permission to open direct flights to Ercan Airport, the president of the Northern Cyprus told Russian media.  
   -Unfortunately, at this moment we have not been able to obtain such permission from Russia, he said.
   The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus is recognized only by Turkey, and all flights to and from the "republic" are required to pass via a landing at a Turkish airport, primarily at Istanbul or Ankara.
   According to media, many Russians now reside in Northern Cyprus, developing close business relations with their homeland, and growing in numbers after the start of Russia's war on Ukraine.
   Operating one new 3,100 m runway, a new terminal was opened on July 20, 2023.
