Dec 14, 2023 (newstodate): According to statistics published by Avinor, the Norwegian airport at Evenes has seen no international cargo in 2023.
This is, however, disputed by other sources..
-In November 2023, and with the first flight on October 31, 2023, Qatar Airways Cargo has performed a weekly Boeing 777F operation at Evenes Airport, with volumes totaling some 400 tonnes, says Stig Winther, Perishables Center Nord Managing Director, and until recently serving with the Norwegian company Pole Position Logistics at the airport.
The re-entry by Qatar Airways Cargo at Evenes Airport was a result of cooperation between SalMar, Ellingsen Seafood AS, and Nordlaks that are also behind PCN, and keen to develop reliable and steady seafood air logistics solutions close to the country's key production sites in the northern part of Norway.
Qatar Airways Cargo earlier launched flights at Evenes Airport on December 14, 2020, offering three weekly operations complementing Qatar Airways passenger flights and freighter services at Oslo Airport.
Qatar Airways Cargo was later joined at Evenes Airport by Virgin Atlantic from February 3, 2021, with two weekly flights to London Heathrow.
However, Qatar Airways suspended operations at Evenes from November 2022, and Virgin Atlantic pulled out already from summer 2021 - leaving seafood exporters to rely solely on cargo operations at Oslo Airport.
Earlier this autumn, the UK cargo carrier European Cargo has been sniffing at Evenes for uplift of Norwegian seafood into London Heathrow Airport for transfer to other carriers to export destinations in Asia and the NAM market.
So far, the carrier has performed two test operations with Airbus A340-600 converted freighters, and evaluations are still ongoing to decide on a potential opening of a scheduled weekly service.
