Nov 17, 2023 (newstodate): Highly dependent on seafood export, Oslo Airport is still to see growth returning to its volumes of flown cargo.
After the first 10 months of this year, Oslo Airport thus remains stuck at 2022-levels with a total of 139,289 tonnes of cargo handled, leaving no trace of growth compared to 2022 that was also marked by a strong downturn.
In October 2023 alone, a total of 14,644 tonnes of flown cargo passed through the airport which was a mere one percent above last year, with international cargo also up by only one percent to 13,699 tonnes.
As for the airport's crucial freighter services, October 24, 2023, saw Martinair Cargo performing its last flight on the route connecting Oslo Airport and Amsterdam, launched only on August 15, 2023, with Martinair operating a weekly Boeing 747-400F flying in from Chicago with US exports and heading back to Amsterdam with seafood shipments to be transferred on KLM, Air France and Martinair Cargo flights to the global marketplace.
On the other hand, Emirates SkyCargo is to return to Oslo Airport with freighter services after a period of absence.
Starting this month, the carrier will operate a weekly Boeing 777F freighter service from Oslo to Dubai adding some 100 tonnes to the capacity on the airline's passenger flights on the route, each lifting 30-40 tonnes of Norwegian seafood.
In January-December 2022 the airport's total flown cargo volumes dropped 11 percent, y-o-y, to 123,651 tonnes, including 116,691 tonnes of international cargo that was also down by 10 percent, y-o-y.
