Nov 16, 2023 (newstodate): Icelandair has found a new Managing Director to lead the airline's cargo business.
New in the seat is Einar Mar Gudmundsson who is actually not really new in the position, having served as an interim solution since September 14, 2023, as Gunnar Mar Sigurfinnsson stepped down after more than 15 years as Finnair Cargo Managing Director.
Einar Mar Gudmundsson has been with Icelandair since 2014 as a Director of the Company’s Technical Operations - a postion he held concurrently with taking on the interim role at Icelandair Cargo.
Mr Gudmundsson takes over the carrier's cargo business at a crucial time, tasked with actions to return the company to profitability by adjusting capacity to demands in the market.
According to the latest Q3/2023 report, the Group's cargo operation has been "very challenging" in 2023 due to difficult market conditions at the same time as Icelandair has invested in more capacity.
After redelivery of the two converted Boeing 767-300 aircraft, two Boeing 757 freighters now in the fleet of Icelandair will be retired in 2023 and 2024, respectively, as their lease periods expire.
The Boeing 757 cargo aircraft will be returned earlier than planned to lessor, and efforts will be strengthened to seek ACMI projects for one of the two Boeing 767 freighters.
