The airport will be built on the site of the former military airport at Vaziani, and ambitions are to build the new airport to serve as a hub offering transit options as well as facilities serving the logistics companies.
The current airport serving Tbilisi has its limitations and will not provide space for large-scale expansion.
Lat modernized in 2007, Tbilisi International Airport is managed by the Turkish TAV Airports, offering the capacity of handling some 3.5 million passengers per year.
In 2022, Tbilisi Airport with two 1,500 m runways, served three million passengers, up 78 percent y-o-y.
According to the current contract concluded by the Georgian government with TAV Georgia, the construction of a new airport is prohibited within a radius of 200 kilometers from Tbilisi; the new airport could be built by 2027, when the contract with TAV Georgia expires.
TAV has been managing Georgia's Tbilisi Airport and Batumi Airport since 2005, later extended by another 11 years, for expiry by 2037.
