Nov 16, 2023 (newstodate): Opened on June 6, 2023, the new "Cool Hotel" at Norway's Oslo Airport saw only limited utilization from the start - but that is to change now...
From November 15, 2023, two new users have signed up with Oslo Airport Cold Storage AS: Spirit Air Cargo Handling and GPC, joining OSCC that was the single user from the start of operations, as well as plying a pivotal role in the project and its early conception.
Built on an airside 15,000 m2 plot leased from Avinor, the Oslo Airport Cold Storage is offering its users 4,500 m2 of cold storage for up to 96 ULDs.
Six doors at each end of the Cool Hotel allow cargo terminals from one end of the building to temporarily store their fully-built seafood ULDs in the temperature-controlled environment pending pick-up by ground handling staff to drive the shipments out from the other end of the building to the aircraft parking stand for loading.
By this measure, seafood and perishable shipments are protected from bird attacks as well as negative impact from uncontrolled weather and seasonal temperature conditions at the airport.
Besides other benefits, storage in the Cool Hotel also saves on needs for icing the boxes; calculations are that cool storage saves some 7,245 tonnes of ice per full seafood freighter load, translating into better utilization of the capacity and lower per-ULD costs.
