Nov 01, 2023 (newstodate): Great news for Norwegian seafood exporters: freighter traffic has returned to Evenes Airport!
As a result of cooperation between SalMar, Ellingsen Seafood AS, and Nordlaks, Qatar Airways Cargo routed a Boeing 777F aircraft through Evenes Airport on October 31, 2023, heading for Doha and onward transfer to the carrier's flights to Asian destinations.
Qatar Airways Cargo is now to operate one weekly flight from Evenes on Tuesdays, relieving exporters of the need for trucking shipments south to Oslo Airport.
The operation is supported by the freight forwarding company Air Cargo Logistics AS, handling is provided by Wideroe Ground Handling AS, and NordicGSA is serving Qatar Airways Cargo as its GSSA.
With Evenes Airport's proximity to the production sites, only some 2.5 hours of trucking are required for the seafood shipments to be on-board a freighter ready for flight, compared to trucking times to Oslo Airport requiring up to 20 hours on the road.
Qatar Airways Cargo first launched flights at Evenes Airport on December 14, 2020, offering three weekly operations complementing Qatar Airways passenger flights and freighter services at Oslo Airport.
Qatar Airways Cargo was later joined at Evenes Airport by Virgin Atlantic from February 3, 2021, with two weekly flights to London Heathrow.
However, Qatar Airways suspended operations at Evenes from November 2022, and Virgin Atlantic pulled out already from summer 2021 - leaving seafood exporters to rely solely on cargo operations at Oslo Airport.
