Oct 31, 2023 (newstodate): Sweden's Taby Air Maintenance, TAM, has obtained FAA certification of its LPV-modification kit for the Saab 2000.
LPV –localizer performance with vertical guidance- will become mandatory in Europe from early 2024.
TAM’s LPV-modification was certified by EASA on August 10, 2023, and has now also obtained FAA cerfication on October 25, 2023.
The modification package, developed in-house in collaboration with Canadian CMC Electronics, is customized for the Saab 2000, allowing the cockpit layout to remain virtually unaltered, utilizing current screens.
When installed, modified aircraft will be able to make high-precision approaches to any airport, where older ILS-systems have been replaced with a GPS-based LPV solution
In the air as a passenger aircraft now for more than 30 years, Sweden's Saab 2000 is secured a long life in commercial service.
Now also in the cargo industry as TAM, Taby Air Maintenance, completed the world's first cargo conversion of the Saab 2000 passenger aircraft, lifting off on March 6, 2023, to perform a post-maintenance flight with a focus on systems tests.
The Saab 2000 first flew in March 1992 and was certified in 1994, while the last of 63 built aircraft built was delivered in April 1999.
Already in 2017, TAM delivered its first converted SAAB 340B freighter aircraft directly to operations in the US cargo industry on a contract with Jetstream Aviation Capital, a Florida-based turboprop aircraft lessor which is the largest global lessor of Saab 340 and Saab 2000 aircraft.
TAM was the first company worldwide to be approved by the US Federal Aviation Administration, FAA, as well as the European Aviation Safety Authority, EASA, to perform a full cargo conversion of Saab 340A and Saab 340B - a process requiring about six weeks of work at the plant close to Orebro Airport.
