Oct 16, 2023 (newstodate): Plans for construction of the new airport to serve Qaqortoq in Greenland are now back on trail..with some delay in the process.
As parts of its new airport infrastructure, Greenland will see the opening of new Transatlantic airports at Nuuk and Ilulissat by the end of 2024, and a new fixed-wing airport at Qaqortoq was planned for opening by fall 2025.
The plans, however, ran into turbulence as negotiations between KAIR, Kalaallit Airports Domestic, and the Danish construction company MT Hojgaard collapsed due to disagreement over costs and price.
Now KAIR has instead inked a contract with KJ Greenland to take over construction of the new passenger terminal, service building and the control tower, and with these facilities in place the new Qaqortoq Airport will expectedly open for traffic in spring 2026.
KJ Greenland is also engaged in the construction of the coming new airport serving Ilulissat.
