Oct 03, 2023 (newstodate): Air Malta has come to the end of its life - but resurrection is guaranteed by the Maltese government's decision.
After the EU Commission's no-go to the Maltese government's request for approval of a fresh capital injection into the current Air Malta, the ailing airline will be closed down with the last flight on March 30, 2024.
Instead, Malta is to set up a new carrier, possibly operating under the same name, and with the same fleet of eight Airbus A320 aircraft.
The new carrier will lift off on its maiden flight on March 31, 2024, with a route network initially comprising 17 destinations, compared to the existing airline's network of 37 destinations.
While several routes are thus to be cut with the implementation of the new airline, plans are also emerging for new routes to be opened gradually as operations gain pace.
First among the planned new routes is a connection between Malta and Copenhagen Airport, Maltese media say - but only from 2026/27...
