Oct 02, 2023 (newstodate): As parts of its new airport infrastructure, Greenland will see the opening of new Transatlantic airports at Nuuk and Ilulissat by the end of 2024, and a new fixed-wing airport at Qaqortoq is planned for opening by fall 2025.
Well, nor quite: While work on the new airports at Nuuk and Ilulissat is still progressing, doubts have again been cast over the project for the new airport serving Qaqortoq, in southern Greenland, today served only by helicopters.
According to Greenlandic media, negotiations between KAIR, Kalaallit Airports Domestic and the Danish construction company MT Hojgaard have collapsed due to disagreement over costs and price stalling the process, and a new opening date is up in the air.
It is not the first time schedules for Qaqortoq Airport have been changed; originally, plans were to see the commissioning by the end of 2023; plans were then adjusted to autumn 2024 - and now uncertainty shrouds the project.
In September 2023, the mayor of the commune housing Qaqortoq Airport aired the hope for seeing the runway extended to 1,799 m instead of as now 1,499 m, also adding to some confusion.
