This week, the Canadian Transportation Agency has approved a license for the airline to operate a scheduled international service with large aircraft in accordance with the Arrangement between the Government of Canada and the Government of Iceland, set out in an agreed minute signed on July 11, 2007.
So far, no information has been published about start-up date, frequency, route or aircraft type.
WestJet has it main base at Calgary and operates a fleet comprising 112 Boeing 737 and 787 aircraft of various types, including four Boeing 737-800BCF aircraft.
The decision to pursue non-stop service to Iceland comes as WestJet works to make Calgary International Airport into a "single global connecting hub" for long-haul flights.
Serving air connection between Canada and Iceland are today Icelandair with flights from Keflavik to Toronto and Vancouver, and Play operating flights from Keflavik to John C. Munro Hamilton International Airport.
