Jan 11, 2023 (newstodate): Finland is again seeing a major change in ground handling as Swissport decides to halt all ground handling business at Helsinki Airport after losing its contract with Finnair, its launch customer in the market.
Accounting for about one-third of Swissport's business in Finland, the company's ground handling business comprises passenger services, ramp and baggage handling, and de-icing services.
Swissport had been providing Finnair with ground handling services at Helsinki Airport since December 1, 2011, until March 2021, when the contract went to Aviator; however, Swissport regained the contract to provide ground handling at Helsinki Airport for Finnair's fleet of long haul aircraft, primarily the Airbus A350, starting from December 13, 2021.
Swissport's large-scale cargo operations which comprises the management of Finnair's COOL Nordic Cargo Hub since 2019 in addition to Swissport-owned cargo handling operations for multiple airline customers are not affected by the move, and Swissport will continue to invest in its Finnish lounge business as well as in its fueling services which it started up in October 2022.
