Immediately after midnight, the reclassification of the Mogadishu FIR from Class G - uncontrolled - to Class A took place.
The opening comes after the installation and commissioning of new radio navigation and other pertinent infrastructure, paving the road for the resumption of ATC in the Mogadishu FIR covering the areas around the Horn of Africa and extending into the Indian Ocean.
The Somalian FIR is key to some of the region’s busiest air lanes connecting the African subcontinent south of Ethiopia with the Middle East and the Indian subcontinent, as well as Western Europe with the Indian subcontinent and Indian Ocean.
