Jan 06, 2023 (newstodate): Plans for construction of a new dedicated seafood terminal at Norway's Narvik Evenes Airport seem to have been abandoned - for now at least.
According to industry sources, the plans have been shelved for now reportedly due to current uncertainty around the future land taxation system directly affecting the seafood industry and its competitiveness in the global, notably the US seafood marketplace.
The airport is today capable of handling seafood shipments at a 1,000 m2 hangar earlier used by Kato-Air, but plans are ready for construction of a 3,000 m2 terminal dedicated to seafood handling.
Driving the process has been Perishable Center North AS, with Stig Winther as its CEO, and main shareholders including Nordlaks Opdrett, Ellingsen Seafood, Salfra and Astafjord Export.
In 2021, Perishable Center North signed an LoI with developer Evenes Tomteselskap AS to construct the facility and rent it to the client.
If realized, the planned terminal would become the country's first dedicated seafood cargo terminal outside of Oslo, drastically reducing totasl transport times as well as the volume of trucking loads of shipments heading for uplift from Oslo Airport.
