Jan 03, 2023 (newstodate): Shortly before Christmas, and taking the market by surprise, SAS announced the opening of two new routes from Scandinavia to New York.
One route opening will take place at Sweden's Gothenburg Airport, where SAS claims to launch its first-ever direct nonstop flight to New York EWR with three weekly rotations from April 2023.
Actually, SAS launched flights on the route already from the opening of the airport in 1977, but after a few years the flight was discontinued.
On firmer ground as a true novelty is the opening of flights from Denmark's Aalborg Airport also to New York EWR, starting from the same date and also offering three weekly rotations.
In both cases, the route openings are facilitated by SAS' fleet of new Airbus A321LR aircraft that offer long-haul flight economies on thinner routes, and the need to open new revenue streams for the carrier that still flies in challenging financial clouds and currently under Chapter 11-protection.
