Jan 25, 2023 (newstodate): The Ukrainian carrier SkyUp Airlines has still one aircraft grounded at Kiev Boryspil Airport - with little hope of retrieval in times of war.
While the carrier managed to keep all other aircraft in the fleet safely away from the country as Russia launched its invasion, the Boeing 737-800 aircraft did try to reach sanctuary outside Ukraine, but was forced to return to the airport as the country's airspace was closed on February 24, 2022.
Even if Kiev experiences calm moments, the anti-aircraft systems remain operative and cannot safely distinguish friend from foe.
Also, the aircraft is not allowed to fly without insurance coverage, which is also not available under the prevailing circumstances.
SkyUp Airlines operates a fleet comprising two Boeing 737-700 and nine Boeing 737-800 aircraft.
