Jan 18, 2023 (newstodate): Especially had hit by the Corona pandemic and closure of the Russian airspace, Finland's Helsinki Airport saw its cargo volumes down in 2022.
A total of 171,198 tonnes of cargo was handled in January-December 2022, a decline by 3 percent, y-o-y, and 25 percent below volumes in pre-Covid 2019 when the airport handled a total of 229,532 tonnes of cargo after growing 13.4 percent, y-o-y.
2022 actually started out promisingly with double-digit growth in volumes until February 24, 2022, when Russia launched its invasion of Ukraine.
In addition to the war effects on Finland's air traffic, the sustained Covid-19 disruption of the Asian, notably the Chinese, market also forced Finnair to suspend and/or re-route its Asian flights, adding further harm to the air cargo industry.
International cargo volumes handled at Helsinki Airport thus also dropped by 3.1 percent, y-o-y, to 169,632 tonnes in 2022, compared to pre-Covid 219,817 tonnes, up 14 percent, in 2019.
