Jan 20, 2023 (newstodate): Uzbekistan is keen and determined to strengthen its role in the east-west air cargo business and developing the role of Navoi Airport as a global cargo and en-route hub.
By the end of November 2022, and after two years of negotiations, Uzbekistan Airports signed an agreement with Abu Dhabi-based Terminals Holding to take on the management of the cargo terminal of Navoi International Airport.
The goal is to combine joint resources for the development of the Navoi Airport cargo hub, using modern technologies and investments offered by Terminals Holding.
A delegation from Terminals Holding is currently in Navoi, and based on the results of the analysis, the company will design a strategy for the development of the cargo hub and a forecast for promising routes for cargo flights.
The cargo terminal of Navoi International Airport was built in 2008 as part of an agreement expiring in 2019 between Uzbekistan Airways and Korean Air.
The cargo terminal, commissioned on August 12, 2010, has an annual capacity of handling up to 100,000 tonnes and provided a vital element in the plan to set up an international logistics center at Navoi as contained in the MoU between Uzbekistan Airways and Korean Air, signed in February 2008.
In 2022, Uzbekistan Airports carried out the reconstruction of the cargo terminal, and Navoi Airport now handles about 40 cargo calls per month - half of the pre-Covid volume, and including tech stops, cargo transfer, import and export cargo, generating a total of 18,600 tonnes of cargo handled in 2022.
Among companies operating at Navoi Airport today are MNG Cargo, Turkish Airlines, Silk Way.
