Jan 30, 2023 (newstodate): Georgia, in the Caucasus region, is keen to rebuild and expand its air connectivity after the coronavirus-lockdowns.
This weekend, Tbilisi Airport saw the return of flights from Urumqi, in neighboring China's Xinjiang province, with China Southern Airlines now offering one weekly rotation, due to increase by the start of the coming summer '23 schedule.
China Southern Airlines started operating the route from June 9, 2011, with three weekly rotations as the first-ever direct scheduled non-stop air services between the two countries.
Georgia has also inked an air services agreement with the UK, a key event after the UK retreat from the European Union.
Under the agreement, airlines from both side may freely operate to and from any point in the two markets without any limitations on capacity and pricing in the passenger and cargo markets.
Besides, efforts are also made to see the launch already in June 2023 of direct air services between Georgia and the USA.
To be operated by aircraft registered either in Georgia or in the EU, plans are considering the opening of two alternate routings; one is Tbilisi-New York, and another Tbilisi-Brussels-New York.
