Jan 16, 2023 (newstodate): Finally, Etihad is realizing its long-awaited plans for launch of direct nonstop services between Abu Dhabi and Copenhagen, marking the carrier's first passenger route to the Nordic markets.
Starting from October 1, 2023, Etihad will be offering four weekly rotations on the route served with Boeing 787-9 aircraft under a code-share agreement with SAS.
Already in 2014, at a joint Etihad/Air Berlin press conference in Berlin, Etihad's CEO, James Hogan confirmed that Scandinavia was indeed an attractive market, and that Etihad expected to launch routes into the region within "the next few years."
On the cargo side, Etihad Crystal Cargo launched two weekly flights from Copenhagen Airport to Abu Dhabi with Boeing 777F aircraft flying in from Amsterdam and heading for Abu Dhabi after the call at Copenhagen Airport.
The first flight was performed on October 20, 2016, but the operation was suspended again from May 2017.
First to enter the Danish market with direct passenger flights from the Gulf region was Qatar Airways calling at Copenhagen from March 30, 2010, followed by Gulf Air starting from July 1, 2011, and finally Emirates launching flights from Dubai to Copenhagen on August 1, 2011. Gulf air, however, retreated again with its last Scandinavian operation on February 4, 2013.
