Sep 23, 2022 (newstodate): Latvia's Riga Airport has announced the opening of an international tender for RIX Airport City project.
The tender will take place in two stages, and potential participants among investors and developers can apply for the first qualifying stage by December 16, 2022.
After that, Riga Airport together with the applicants qualified for the second stage will continue the process of negotiation on the details of the initial concept of the RIX Airport City to obtain the most appropriate and economically advantageous proposal for the development and use of the territory, and the contract with the successful tenderer is expected to be concluded by the end of 2023.
A key element in the airport's medium-term strategy, "Runway 2027", the concept of RIX Airport City includes the development of existing traditional aviation services – passenger and cargo transport – and integration with other business activities, from innovation and start-ups, e-commerce, logistics and manufacturing businesses, to various kinds of tourism, hospitality, and leisure services.
The future RIX Airport City will include the new 30,000 m2 airport passenger terminal with the capacity of handling up to 12 million passengers annually, to be connected with Rail Baltica railway station to form a unified and multi-modal transport hub serving both commercial and military purposes.
58 million euros have been allocated for investments into the aerodrome infrastructure, including both reconstruction and renovation of aircraft aprons and taxi-ways, as well as replacement of aerodrome transport machinery, full transition of apron lighting to LED, as well as other pertinent investments.
In 2021, Riga Airport counted 2.35 million passengers, an increase of 17 percent y-o-y, but still down 70 percent compared to pr-Covid 2019. 22 percent of the passengers were transiting through Riga Airport
The total volume of air cargo handled at Riga Airport in 2021 reached 27.9 thousand tonnes, up 20 percent y-o-y, and two percent up on 2019.
