Sep 28, 2022 (newstodate): Poland is advancing plans for constructing a new major airport situated between Warsaw and Lodz.
Part of an integrated, intermodal mega transportation hub called Solidarity Transport Hub, the coming new airport purports to become the largest in the region when opening in 2027 and aiming at handling of initially some 40 mio passenger per year.
To be developed as a dual-use airport for civil and military purposes, the new central airport is expected to play a significant role in the security of Poland and Central and Eastern Europe and constituting the main component of the project, supported by a comprehensive rail and road transport infrastructure also linking to another key infrastructure project, Rail Baltica in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania.
Construction works are slated to start in 2023, including an airside infrastructure comprising runways, taxiways, runway entry, air traffic control tower and navigation, aprons, an apron for helicopter emergency medical services, and de-icing pads.
The master plan will be ready and approved in 2022 when the ground-breaking ceremony will also take place, and all construction works would then be completed in 2027, allowing for operating the new airport and shutting down Warsaw Chopin Airport.
