Sep 23, 2022 (newstodate): Greenland is awaiting the opening of its new Transatlantic airport serving the capital Nuuk by late 2023 reducing the need for domestic transfer flights.
Today, the country is served with international flights by Kangerlussuaq Airport in the Southern and sparsely populated part of the country, requiring passengers to connect via domestic flights to end destinations including the capital Nuuk.
In any case, harsh weather conditions including strong winds, fogs and turbulence is a determining factor for Air Greenland's regularity.
A recent study reveals confirms fears that the actual position of Nuuk Airport will still be a challenge.
Compared to the current international airport at Kangerlussuaq that sees only few days of flight cancellations due to stable conditions, fogs and strong winds will be more of a problem at the coming new Nuuk Int'l Airport.
However, estimates - and hopes - are that the use of larger aircraft types, a wider runway and the implementation of new navigation and runway lighting systems will eventually outbalance the adversities to secure a higher regularity of flights than in today's situation.
