Sep 07, 2022 (newstodate): August 2022 was a bleak month for cargo volumes handled at Finland's Helsinki Airport.
A total of 11,501 tonnes of cargo and mail, int'l and domestic combined, was handled, which was a decline by 6.2 percent, y-o-y.
11,373 tonnes of cargo and mail were carried on international lines, which was also a drop by 6.3 percent; of this 11,196 tonnes were cargo alone that was down by 2.7 percent, y-o-y.
In January-August 2022 the airport is seeing its total cargo and mail volumes still up by 11.6 percent, y-o-y, thanks to a strong rebound in the first part of the year; the growth curve is however now declining month-by-month.
Looking slightly ahead, Helsinki Airport will see Japan Airlines increasing its frequency of flights from Tokyo Haneda Airport from today's four to five weekly rotations using Boeing 787-9 aircraft in October 2022.
Due to the sustained Covid-19 market disruptions, and adding today's "new normal" after Russia's invasion of Ukraine and the closure of Russian airspace, Finnair is now to change its focus away from the North Asian markets to serving instead West and South Asian routes and, not least, the North Atlantic lanes.
