Sep 20, 2022 (newstodate): The Czech airport at Ostava is seeking a new role targeting the air cargo market.
Today, Ostrava Leos Janacek Airport is primarily served by charter carriers and passenger airlines LOT and Ryanair as well as SkyUp Airlines, but is seeing limited growth potentials in these markets due to its proximity to Polish airports including Katowice and Cracow.
Cargo has more potentials, and in 2021 the airport handled 18,000 tonnes of cargo, generating 40 percent of the airport's revenues.
Today, DHL and UPS are the main cargo companies at the airport that is also seeing China freighter flights by EGT Express Logistic Solutions.
The airport management is now designing a new strategy to develop the airport's cargo business over the next three years, including expanding existing cargo terminals and leasing land to new cargo operators including the Austrian company Innofreight, while the Czech postal company is also to open a new parcel sorting facility later this month.
