Sep 02, 2022 (newstodate): August 2022 gave little cause for jubilation at Denmark's Billund Airport as far as cargo was concerned.
A total of 6,039 tonnes of cargo was handled at Billund, which was down 3.2 percent, y-o-y.
The decline was driven by a drop by 6.4 percent in cargo exports to 4,393 tonnes, while imports were still up by 6.3 percent to 1,646 tonnes.
The development in cargo at Billund Airport thus did not live up to expectations that had foreseen the launch by Virgin Atlantic Cargo on August 3, 2022, of three weekly rotations connecting Billund Airport to its main base at London Heathrow Airport with transfer of cargo shipments to and from destinations in the USA, South Africa and a range of other options to spur sustained growth in volumes.
Commenting on the monthly statistics, the airport relates the drop in cargo to a fall in handling of Norwegian salmon volumes due to rising prices of salmon and correspondingly lower sales in the US market.
However, according to statistics from the Norwegian Seafood Council, exports of salmon to the US market grew by 69 percent, y-o-y, during weeks 31-34, 2022, to 1,164 tonnes while salmon prices did increase by some 50 percent during the period, compared to last year.
So maybe the Norwegian salmon has just found ways to reach the US markets, including also the new flights by Norse Atlantic out of Oslo?
